Google, Eric Schmidt, Android OS

Okay, we all know that Google’s Android is king of the mobile OS hill, at least for now, but exactly how many Android-powered smartphones are being activated daily?

Google Chairman Eric Schmidt answered that question earlier this morning with news that Android activation are now hovering around 1.5 million a day, up from 1.3 million activations reported last September. More than 740 million total Android smartphones are in use in 160 countries. Cheaper Android phones are arguably the biggest reason for this growth, with the $100 price point being referred to as the “magic number” for consumers.

“Android is by far the primary vehicle by which people are going to see smartphones,” Schmidt said. “Our goal is to reach everybody.”

Schmidt was tight-lipped about anything new regarding the Android OS and what Google has in store for the future, but with Google I/O just around the corner, we won’t have too long to wait.
