WhatsApp, WhatsApp Messenger, Messaging Apps

A new background agent isn’t the only thing coming to the upcoming version of WhatsApp Messenger. The new version will also reportedly add the ability to initiate a call.

The new report comes courtesy of WindowsTeca. It’s not voice over ip calling, no, but it does fit perfectly within the app. After all, WhatsApp use is on the verge of replacing SMS text messaging, so it makes sense to bring more of the phone’s core functions directly into the application.

So far, the upcoming WhatsApp update — no exact date on its release yet — will include:

  • A new background agent independent of the music player
  • Support to the zooming of images
  • Fast Resume
  • Optimization of the notification system of messages and the app
  • New emoticons
  • Forwarding audio and video files received from other contacts
  • Removing files received
  • Showing smiles in Tile

With a new UI launched earlier this year along with these new features, it’s clear that WhatsApp has been doing a lot of polishing to their app for Windows Phone. It will be great to see how the new WhatsApp experience performs when the app launches later this year.
