KakaoTalk, Kakao, Kakao friends

WeChat isn’t the only Asian messaging application to gain user mindshare this week. KakaoTalk is also seeing great success, specifically with its Kakao Game gaming platform, which the company claims has surpassed 500 million subscribers early this month.

Since launching in September 2012, the platform only had a handful of games (10 to be exact) from 7 partners, and now there are currently 467 games from 230 partners, including CJ E&M, Nexon, Wemade Entertainment and Neowiz. Some of these games include Wooga’s Jelly Splash and Game Insight’s 2020: My Country.

To celebrate this landmark achievement, the company is giving its users a free emoticons pack for downloading any Kakao-recommended game titles through June 2. It’s not clear if this promotion is running in all markets or just the company’s home market of South Korea, so if you’re planning on downloading any Kakao Game titles, let us know if you receive the promo. In the meantime, we’ll work to get this confirmed.

If you haven’t yet had the chance to partake in Kakao gaming, now’s your chance. You can get the app free in all major app stores.
