Google Hangouts, Hangouts calling, VoIP apps

It’s not just travel SIM cards that can help you save money while calling abroad. Voice over IP apps also help quite a bit, and now Google Hangouts users in India can enjoy free calls.

There’s one catch, though. While these calls can be made to any country, only those placed to the United States and Canada will be free. Keep in mind that this is also for standard phone calls. Calling between Hangouts users, like most VoIP apps, is free.

Despite the limitation to the two countries, this new free voice calls offer, announced yesterday, makes the service a good option for the many people who need to stay in touch with family, friends, and co-workers in North America and the Indian subcontinent.

And again, while only the free calls apply to the US and Canada, you can also place calls to other countries with lower rates than standard national carriers.

To place a Hangouts call from an Android device, you need to be sure you have the Hangouts dialer app installed. It can be downloaded via Google Play for free.
