Vine is a mobile video messaging app that enables its users to create and post video clips that have a maximum length of six seconds and share them across Twitter and Facebook. The app was founded by Dom Hofmann, Rus Yusupov, and Colin Kroll in June 2012.
Twitter acquired Vine in October 2012 while the app was still in pre-release. The app debuted on iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch on January 24, 2013 and quickly grew in popularity, becoming the most-downloaded free app on the platform in less than three months.
Vine was rolled out to Android devices on June 3, 2013. It was then launched on Windows Phone on November 12, 2013.
The app boasts over 40 million registered users as of November 2013.
