It hasn’t exactly been a secret that WhatsApp was planning a major release for Windows Phone 8, and that very release has been rolled out today.

The new release, which carries the version number 2.10.488.0 goes beyond the norm and brings an exciting list of new features and tweaks to the popular messaging application that fans on Windows Phone will be delighted to have grace their Live Tiled lives.

Some of these features include:

  • Initiate voice calls from within the app
  • New background agent (music friendly!)
  • New smileys
  • Fixed notifications for users
  • Users can now see smileys on the double wide tile
  • Fast resume
  • Chat history back-up
  • Large images shown

As previously hinted, this most recent update for WhatsApp Messenger also includes support for Windows Phone 7.8 users as well.

If you’re ready to experience the new and improved WhatsApp Messenger for yourself, you can download it right now via the Windows Phone Store. Great job WhatsApp!

Now we just need fixes like this from Rebtel, KakaoTalk, Line, Kik, etc.

    • Edward Not From Twilight

Kik especially. it’s been what, 18 months since their last update. 19 months?

      • Ralphage

19 months. Seriously in need of one. Way before WP8 came out.

        • Andy Quek

They already mentioned that they have no intention in supporting Windows Phone 8.

          • Trent569

Where did they say this? :/

  • Edward Not From Twilight

Love the new version. No problems so far. Lumia 920

    • Ralphage

I have a Lumia 920 also and like I said mine keeps freezing. Maybe it’s my device?

      • Zultan The Englishman

That’s what I’m saying, you could be short on memory or it’s possible you have a dud device. You can also try removing some apps to see if that helps or use the memory shrink app, sometimes that helps.

  • UnityEngineRev

Switching to WhatsApp from Kik as soon as I can get all my friend over.

  • Ralphage

Mine keeps freezing 🙁 I’ve tried redownload and restart

    • Zultan The Englishman

What phone do you have? How many apps have you downloaded? It could be short on memory.

      • Zultan The Englishman

Try removing apps, memory shrink, or something. My 920 works with WhatsApp perfectly.

  • Trekkie

They really need to add VoIP features into WhatSapp.

    • Ralphage

      Why? :/

      • Trent569

        Why not?
