As of August 9, 2011, with the release of Messenger for Mobile, Facebook users were able to communicate with friends and family members on iPhone, iPad, and Android devices. A few months later, on October 11, 2011, the app became available for legacy BlackBerry devices. A desktop version of the Messenger app was was also made available as of March 5, 2012 for Windows 7.

The app was first announced as coming soon to Windows Phone at Mobile World Congress 2014 and was officially released the week after the event.

Stickers became a part of the application in May 2013 that attempted to put Messenger on par with dedicated messaging apps such as LINE and Viber. Facebook also launched video calling worldwide as of May 2015.

Facebook Messenger was renamed to simply “Messenger” at the end of October 2013, coinciding with the unveiling of a brand new UI change that gave it a look resembling WhatsApp Messenger and other messaging apps on the market.
