WeChat Messaging Application, WeChat App, WeChat Messages

We’re definitely big fans of SIM cards around here, but a new WeChat SIM card isn’t about keeping international roaming charges low. It’s about, well, WeChat, and it’s going to really only be beneficial to you if you happen to live in or if you’re going to be visiting China.

The SIM will be offered with initial exclusivity in Guangdong Province in a collaboration between Tencent and China Unicom and will include an independent data package specifically for WeChat messaging services as well as access to the company’s internal media and games based services. The SIM will begin selling on August 8.

According to Phoenix New Media (translated) the SIM will be available for 36 Yuan (roughly $5 USD), but there’s no mention of exactly what will be included in the package. It’s worth noting, though that Tencent and China Unicom collaborated on a SIM in 2011, which offered 500MB of data, so it’s possible we could see the same or a similar offer here.
