Line App, Line VoIP, Line Messaging

The final count is in, and popular VoIP and messaging app LINE has officially passed the 200 million registered user mark as of Saturday, July 21, just over two months after it hit the 150 million user mark on May 2.

The Line VoIP and Messaging application was first launched on June 23, 2011 by the Japanese arm of South Korea based NHN after the Tohoku earthquake set the company on the road to the discovery that a data service would work and be more efficient than the network currently in place.

To celebrate this milestone, LINE is offering 4 sets of paid stickers featuring LINE’s original characters free for one day each:

  • Noon, July 23 (Tue) to 11.59am (GMT+9), July 24 (Wed) – Brown & Cony’s Secret Date!
  • Noon, July 24 (Wed) to 11.59am (GMT+9), July 25 (Thu) – Cony’s Happy Work Life
  • Noon, July 25 (Thu) to 11.59am (GMT+9), July 26 (Fri) – Moon: Mad Angry Edition
  • Noon, July 26 (Fri) to 11.59am (GMT+9), July 27 (Sat) – Sally: Special Edition

As always, the stickers can be downloaded through the Shop on iPhone and Android and will be valid for 180 days after download.

Since its launch, LINE has grown beyond Japan to countries around the world, but is still far behind its most aggressive competitor WeChat, which has over 250 million active users worldwide and 400 million registered users.

Line is holding its annual “Hello, Friends in Tokyo” Event on August 21 and has recently signed an agreement with Metaps to monetize its apps.
