KakaoTalk, Kakao friends, KakaoTalk news

Seoul, South Korea-based Kakao has announced that its popular KakaoTalk application has been shortlisted as one of the ‘Most Innovative Mobile App’ nominees for Global Mobile Awards 2014.

For those who aren’t aware, the Global Mobile Awards is an award given by the GSMA, an alliance of mobile operators and other key players in the mobile ecosystem. The GSMA has been recognizing major innovation milestones in mobile for the past 19 years.

KakaoTalk making the short list for the Most Innovative Mobile App award recognizes that the company behind it has been changing the game, the markets it serves, and the experience for customers through technical, commercial, and even business level innovations.

KakaoTalk’s innovations have expanded far beyond messaging

Of course, like many messaging applications, KakaoTalk is no longer simply a messaging platform. There’s a lot more to it beyond its gaming platform as well. The company has also moved into the digital content arena as well as mobile commerce with its sticker shop and other in-app purchasing abilities. In fact, KakaoTalk was the first messaging app — before LINE, Viber, and others — to offer this ability.

There’s still some time before the final award winners are announced out of the more than 160 shortlisted companies and services. The final selection is expected to be announced at this year’s Mobile World Congress, and we’ll be covering all the fun right here on TruTower.
