Despite a backlash from users resulting from the separation of Messenger from its main app, Facebook’s Messenger continues to march ahead and has surpassed 500 million downloads in the Google Play Store this week.

The achievement, first spotted by Android Police, marks the third time that one of Facebook’s apps has hit the mark, with the main app and recently acquired WhatsApp being the other two. Facebook remains the only non-Google developer to have reached the 500 million download mark.

Still, the app continues to rack up one-star ratings and one wonders how long it will take before the flood of low ratings stop or until Facebook decides to take a step back and put Messenger back into the main social network app. Many users have opted to use Facebook’s mobile app in lieu of the standalone Messenger app to keep in touch with family and friends.
