4G LTE, International Roaming, Roaming

The roaming world may have a light forming at the end of the 4G LTE tunnel as South Korean operator SK Telecom has announced that it has launched the world’s first commercial LTE service on July 1 that makes use of multi-carrier (MC) mobile technology to enhance speed and quality of service.

The service uses two frequency bands: 800MHz frequency band (20MHz) and the 1.8GHz band (20MHz) to improve the user experience and make the network more reliable. The new network will reportedly work with the Vega Racer 2 and LTE Samsung Galaxy S III after firmware updates.

Because of the fragmented nature in which 4G LTE networks are being launched, MC is one answer to working around the problem and enabling international roaming much easier. Many parts of the world have chosen the 1.8 GHz band to deploy their 4G LTE networks, which means Tru SIM users may be using MC phones in the future to roam internationally unless Qualcomm does indeed find a more permanent fix.
